As you may be aware, PayPal announced, last month, that it was opening a global operations center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where it would employ about 400 people…
…and then abruptly canceled the project, with its 400 jobs, because North Carolina passed legislation which, effectively told people to use bathrooms consistent with their genitalia – i.e. if you have a penis, used the men’s room and if you have a vagina use the women’s room.
Here is the start of PayPal’s statement about pulling out of Charlotte:
Wow. What high-minded folks they are over at PayPal. Look at how their principles dictate their business decisions. How uplifting.
Except…
Let’s start with the fact that North Carolina’s law explicitly states that it is illegal to discriminate against people based on their gender or sexual orientation, which means that PayPal’s decision is not protecting anyone – other than the company’s image among the hardest line activists out there; the ones who would organize embarrassing protests and make PayPal seem like intolerant monsters.
Now let’s continue with the following information, pulled from Rick Moran’s illuminating article at pjmedia.com:
How pious. How noble. How hypocritical.
The hysteria ginned up over a law that keeps men from using the women’s restroom is to be expected. It’s what social justice warriors do best.
But where’s the outrage over PayPal’s decision to locate offices in some of the most anti-gay countries in the world?
PayPal partnered with a Middle East payment company, Network International, to open an office in Dubai. The United Arab Emirates employs the penalty of death to those convicted of being gay or performing gay sex. So PayPal punishes North Carolina for keeping men out of the ladies’ room while sucking up to a government that executes people just because they’re gay. Because, justice.
PayPal has an office in Chennai, India — a country where being caught kissing a member of the same sex could get you 10 years in prison.
PayPal has an office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where a report by Human Rights Watch states “that transgender persons face arbitrary arrest, physical and sexual assault, imprisonment, discriminatory denial of health care and employment, and other abuses.”
And North Carolina denying the use of the women’s room to men is as bad as that?
The bottom line is…well, the bottom line. PayPal ignores its “values and principles” in its quests for profits. The same holds true for the rest of corporate America, which undoubtedly will get in line to trash North Carolina while bragging about how tolerant and holy they are.
It’s nauseating.
Wait a minute. PayPal is sticking it to Charlotte, North Carolina because the state legislated that men, gay or straight, should stay out of women’s bathrooms – but it is fine with Dubai, which executes gay people?
And PayPal has no problem with offices in places like India and Malaysia (among others – there are more) – which have no problem at all oppressing every group it so piously claims to be protecting in Charlotte?
This is PayPal hypocrisy, in capitals and bold print.
H Y P (A Y-P A L) O C R I S Y
If these people had any honesty and any shame, they would apologize and immediately reinstate their project in Charlotte, North Carolina.
But they won’t. When it comes to appeasing the loudest, most media-entrenched group (which always seems to be on the left, doesn’t it), they have folded like a $3 umbrella.
And they’re going to stay that way. You can bet the house, car and first-born on it.
