THE RAWLINGS-BLAKE EFFECT

In case anyone doubted what would happen after Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake told the street thugs of Baltimore they had a green light to “destroy” as long as they were within the protest marches (her exact words:  “we gave those who wished to destroy space to do that”) – in effect, allowing the thugs to use legitimate protesters as human shields – here\’s your answer.

From Erica L. Greene and Scott Dancer\’s article for the Baltimore Sun:

Seven police officers were injured Monday afternoon in a violent clash with demonstrators that began near Mondawmin Mall and spread across West Baltimore. One officer was unresponsive and others suffered broken bones, police spokesman Eric Kowalczyk said.

Smoke filled the air as police responded with shields and a tactical vehicle. Demonstrators pelted officers with rocks, bricks and bottles, and assaulted a photojournalist, and officers fired back with tear gas and pepper balls.

Demonstrators set a police vehicle ablaze at North and Pennsylvania avenues. Nearby, they looted a CVS drugstore.

Police spokesman Capt. Eric Kowalczyk called the demonstrators “lawless individuals with no regard for the safety of people that live in that community” and said they would be identified and arrested.

“The group continues to be violent and aggressive. They are disobeying dispersal orders. We are working to evacuate our injured officers,” police said on Twitter.

What “space” should the thugs who injured those police officers get, Ms. Mayor?  What about the “unresponsive” officer, who, from the way that reads, might be dying?  What words of conciliation do you have for him/her?  The officer\’s family?

And what the hell did you expect to happen when you told rioters/looters that they had special dispensation to keep on doing what they were doing?  A festival of peace, love and hugs?

Unless Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is a complete idiot (and the jury is still out on that one) she should immediately be telling police do to whatever it takes to restore order.

No matter how bad she thinks things will be if the police retake the streets,  the alternative – and that alternative will occur very soon if the police remain stymied – is going to be far worse.

What will it be, Ms. Mayor?  Your call.
