Today’s paragraphs come to us from David Harsanyi, writing for townhall.com
In his latest commentary, Mr. Harsanyi – who, though no Democrat is no fan of Mr. Trump either – talks honestly about why Democrats’ impeachment efforts failed – and why the public never bought into those efforts (which, let’s be honest, was the real hoped-for result).
Says Mr. Harsanyi:
Perhaps if the public hadn’t been subjected to four years of interminable hysteria over the United States’ imaginary descent into fascism, it might have been less apathetic toward the fate of “vital” Ukrainian aid that most Democrats had voted against when Obama was president.
And perhaps if institutional media hadn’t spent three years pushing a hyperbolically paranoid narrative of Russian collusion — a debunked conspiracy theory incessantly repeated by Democrats during the impeachment trial — the public wouldn’t be anesthetized to another alleged national emergency.
You simply can’t expect a well-adjusted voter to maintain CNN-levels of indignation for years on end.
If you attack a political opponent for the same thing over and over and over again over an extended period of time, even if you have credible evidence it is a good likelihood that the public is going to become used to, then bored by, then annoyed by those attacks.
When you don’t have credible evidence, that makes things much worse.
And when you toss in the fact that the Democrats’ attacks were led by three eminently unlikable Democrats – adam schiff, Jerrold Nadler, Nancy Pelosi? You literally wind up working for the guy you’re attacking – as the movement in President Trump’s approval ratings seems to bear out.
I therefore award David Harsanyi Paragraphs Of The Day honors for pointing out so well that Democrats made themselves, to paraphrase an old fairy tale, the party that cried wolf…and are now paying for it.
