Would you like to see a video tape of Michael Bloomberg not only condoning “stop and frisk”, but suggesting that too many White people are subjected to the procedure, and too few minorities are?
Believe it or not, that’s no problem at all to provide….
…which, it seems, to me, is an insurmountable problem for Mr. Bloomberg if he wins the Democrat nomination and seeks minority votes in the presidential election.
Here, from a 2013 radio interview, is the video.
“In that case, incidentally, I think we disportionately (sic) stop White people too much and minorities too little”.
That makes things pretty clear, doesn’t it? Not much room to claim he was misquoted or taken out of context, is there? Like none at all.
Now, the truth is, Mr. Bloomberg was making a very valid point. If “stop and frisk” was used in proportion to the crimes being committed – that is, it makes sense that more minorities were being stopped and frisked if there were more reports of minority criminal activity and/or higher crime rates in areas with large minority populations.
But how would you like to be on the campaign trail, trying to sell that to people in, say, the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn? Or south side Chicago? Or countless other minority communities around the country, especially in states that are more competitive than New York and Illinois, where minority votes are an imperative for Democrats to be competitive?
How does Michael Bloomberg get past this issue? My answer is that I don’t know. I doubt that he can.
