THE ASSOCIATED PRESS & FAKE NEWS: VENEZUELA

Here is the headline of a just-published Associated Press article:

TRUMP SAYS HE’S CONSIDERING MILITARY RESPONSE TO VENEZUELA

OMIGOD!! Trump is on the verge of SENDING TROOPS TO VENEZUELA.  He’s a  MADMAN!!!!!!!

Except….

Then we get into the story and find out what really happened:

Trump tells reporters at his New Jersey golf course Friday that he’s “not going to rule out” a military option.”

He adds that it’s “certainly something that we could pursue.”

In other words he is doing no such thing.  All he did was say that it is not ruled out – i.e. there are circumstances under which our military could be used.

NOT that those circumstances exist right now.

NOT that he is about to send any troops now or in the near future.

See, in the most technical sense that headline is correct.  If you don’t say “no” under any circumstances at all, it can be argued that you would consider saying “yes”.

But does it in any way communicate what Trump actually said?  Nope.

That, folks, is fake news at its finest.   And I thank the AP for such an excellent demonstration of it.
