Rebecca Michelle “Mikey” Sherrill, New Jersey’s Democrat candidate for Governor, is lying about Jack Ciatterelli again.
I just watched her new commercial which tells viewers the following (this is exactly as it is shown on the screen):
IN HIS OWN WORDS
HIGH TAX JACK CIATTERELLI”
“A 10% SALES TAX
ON EVERYTHING”
What you see above is accompanied by Ciatterelli’s voice saying “a 10% sales tax on everything”. So the ad must be true, right?
Wrong. The ad is a blatant, 100% lie.
Jack Ciatterelli did NOT propose a 10% sales tax on everything for New Jersey. The ad extracts those words from Ciatterelli’s description of Tennessee’s tax structure.
Doubt me? Here is the exact, verbatim statement that Ciatterelli made, from which those words were pulled:
“I just came back from Tennessee not too long ago. We were on a fundraising trip there, and Tennessee has no income tax. What Tennessee has is a 10% sales tax on everything, including food and clothing.
“The philosophy has always been in this state [that] we have like a 7% sales tax just to round off the numbers, but there’s no sales tax on necessities of life, food and clothing. I will work with the New Jersey State Society of CPAs. We’re going to look at what other states do. And every option is on the table.”
As you can see with your own eyes, Ciatterelli was not proposing a 10% tax for New Jersey. He was describing the tax in Tennessee.
He then compared Tennessee’s 10% sales tax to the tax structure in New Jersey. He finished by saying he would be looking at what other states are doing and explore every option; presumably to decide what, if anything, might be changed in the state.
And this is not the first time Sherrill’s campaign has lied about the 10% sales tax claim. I wrote about Sherrill telling the exact same lie, with the same cherry-picked “quote”, a month ago (September 24th, to be exact).
If we had a functioning, honest mainstream media, this lie would have been called out and debunked then.
But since, with only a few exceptions, we do not have such media, Sherrill and her people are perfectly comfortable lying about it again.
I can only wonder how many people they are fooling with this lie; how many votes Sherrill will get from people who think they are protecting themselves from the nonexistent 10% Ciatterelli sales tax.
Could it get more disgusting than this? Could our media be even more biased than they have to be to let Sherrill get away with this?
I wouldn’t bet against it.
