SCHOOL LUNCH, MICHELLE OBAMA-STYLE

Here is a picture of lunch.  Take a look and tell me if you think it is what Michelle Obama, or her daughters, eat at that time of day:

What\’s that?  You don\’t think that\’s what they eat.  Tell you what:  neither do I.

But it is what was served as “lunch”, at the James Hurst Elementary School in Portsmouth, Virginia, using the guidelines endorsed by Ms. Obama – who evidently thinks kind of meal will get children to eat healthier.

Excerpted from Kyle Ryan\’s article at eagnews.org:

“…a mother took a photo of her child’s paltry school lunch and posted it on social media.

The mom says James Hurst Elementary served the lunch Tuesday.

After the photo began circulating around the community, Food Service Coordinator Jim Gehlhoff admitted the lunch “concerns us,” but added that it might not actually be as bad as it looks.

“Poor lighting and food presentation make this lunch unappealing,” he said in a statement released to the media.

He says it\’s in compliance with the federal lunch rules championed by First Lady Michelle Obama.

“The meal in this photo and other meals served by Portsmouth Public Schools meet nutritional and USDA requirements,” according to the food service coordinator.

An unscientific poll by WAVY found 92.3 percent of respondents (10,138 people) did not believe the lunch was “acceptable.”

The last paragraph of that excerpt says that 92.3% of participants did not believe the lunch was “acceptable”.  What percentage of the children who were served that lunch, do you figure, tossed it out and either waited until they got home, or ate something else – even if they had to sneak it into the school.

Periodically, I have blogged about what is being served under the guise of “healthier food”, and have blogged about the large, and continually increasing, number of school districts which have foregone federal money to opt out of this program and serve children something they actually will eat.  Today is another of those times, and you can bet it won\’t be the last.

Remember that old proverb that you can lead a horse to water but you can\’t make the horse drink it?  Well, you can lead a child to unappetizing food……

Let me finish by posting the Monday, April 20th menu scheduled for Sidwell Friends, the school Sasha and Malia Obama attend:

April 20, 2015

LS

Breadsticks & Pears
Tomato Soup
Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
Gluten-Free Eggplant Parmesan
Spaghetti Squash

Melon

There you go.  Just like what those children in Portsmouth, Virginia got.  Right, Ms. Obama?
