NEW YORK CITY CRIME: DE BLASIO & DISPROPORTIONAL TARGETING

Why did Mayor William de Blasio insist on severely curtailing the “stop and frisk” procedure?  Because he felt that it was disproportionately targeting minorities.

So now that shootings are up for the second straight year, and the murder rate is up 20% in just the past year, what is he doing about it?

Why, the “Summer All Out” program, that\’s what.  And how does this work?

Excerpted from an article posted by CBS – New York:

Under the program, 330 police officers will leave administrative duties to patrol 10 precincts where shootings and murders are up.

NYPD\’s \’Summer All Out\’ Program Will Flood High-Crime Areas With Officers

Areas targeted include the 81st precinct in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the 44th precinct in the Bronx, the 73rd precinct in Brownsville, the 52nd precinct in the Bronx and the 67th precinct in East Flatbush.

In addition to certain precincts, the program also targets high crime housing complexes. Participating officers will patrol during peak crime shifts of 4 a.m. to midnight and midnight to 8 a.m.

Point of order:  if you know anything about New York City, you know that every one of the areas being targeted by “Summer All Out” is vastly populated by minorities.

In other words, Mayor de Blasio gutted “stop and frisk” because it disproportionately targeted minorities.  But now that shootings, both non-fatal and fatal, have spiked, his answer is the “Summer All Out” program, which…disproportionately targets minorities.

There is a lesson to be learned here – something about the common sense of aggressively policing high crime areas, no matter who lives in them.  I wonder if the irony of substituting one way of doing it for another, is or is not lost on Mayor de Blasio.

It would be nice if the local media – maybe CBS-New York or the other network affiliates, or the cable news venues, or the newspapers – noted, and addressed, the irony of this situation.

Don\’t hold your breath waiting.
