Excerpted from Simon Tisdall\’s article for London\’s Daily Guardian:
Iranand its close ally President Basharal-Assad have won the war in Syria, and the US-orchestrated campaign in support of the opposition\’sattempt to topple the Syrian regime has failed, senior Iranianofficials have told the Guardian.
Ina series of interviews in Tehran, top figures who shape Iranianforeign policy said the west\’s strategy in Syria had merelyencouraged radicals, caused chaos and ultimately backfired, withgovernment forces now on the front foot.
“Wehave won in Syria,” said Alaeddin Borujerdi, chairman of theIranian parliament\’s national security and foreign policy committeeand an influential government insider. “The regime will stay. The Americans have lost it.”
Remember when our mainstream media gave Iran non-stop coverage when President Obama read its leaders the riot act? Remember when they did the same with Syria, as President Obama strongly, emphatically, drew a “red line” that bashar al-assad absolutely, unequivocally, could not cross?
Well, where are mainstream media now, as both Iran and Syria – along with their mutual patron Russia – laugh in President Obama\’s face, humiliating him – and, more importantly, the United States – to the rest of the world? Where are they as Iran and Syria demonstrate with perfect clarity that Mr. Obama\’s words are just that – words alone – and mean absolutely nothing? Where are they as our credibility on the world stage swirls straight down the toilet bowl?
Nowhere, that\’s where.
Are the gloating leaders in Iran and Syria right to openly disdain President Obama as if he were a child?
How I wish the answer were no. How I wish they were wrong.
