Zsa Zsa Gabor was a minor entertainment celebrity who parlayed her few accomplishments into decades of media attention. This caused her, as the clever phrase described, to “be famous for being famous”…
…which leads us, I would think, straight to greta thunberg.
Exactly who is greta thunberg and what has she accomplished, other than getting tons of media coverage? If you can come up with anything, let me know.
Her latest foray into nothingness is being on the so-called “freedom flotilla”, of activist-loaded ships heading for Gaza, and – at least as of now – being accompanied by military vessels from Italy and Spain.
But that is about to halve. Italy has announced that once greta and the other attention-seekers get within 150 miles of Israel, it’s bye-bye. Italy is not looking for any military confrontation with Israel; certainly not on behalf of greta thunberg. And I would expect Spain is going to do the same in short order for the same reason:
Italy’s navy will stop following the international flotilla heading to Gaza once it gets within 150 nautical miles (278 km) of the shore, the Italian defense ministry said on Tuesday.
Earlier on Tuesday, an Italian spokeswoman for the flotilla, Maria Elena Delia, said that activists had been informed about the government’s plans to have the navy ship stop and turn back to avoid “a diplomatic incident” with Israel.
She said the flotilla had no intention of heeding Italy’s warnings not to get closer to the shore.
Italy and Spain deployed navy vessels last week to assist the flotilla, after activists said it was hit by drones armed with stun grenades and irritants in international waters off Greece, but without any intention to engage militarily.
Delia said activists were bracing for another strike in the coming hours. “Israel will probably attack us tonight, because all the signals point to this happening,” she said in a video on Instagram.
Israel did not respond to flotilla accusations that it was behind last week’s attacks, but it has vowed to use any means to prevent the boats from reaching Gaza, arguing that its blockade is legal as part of its war against Hamas terrorists who openly seek Israel’s destruction.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has said he expects flotilla boats to be intercepted in the open sea and activists to face arrest.
Don’t you love that claim that Israel was hitting the flotilla with drones, stun grenades and irritants – none of which anyone can prove actually happened? A little common sense here: if Israel wanted to stop these people in the open seas, I assure you it is capable of doing more than hitting them with minor annoyances.
And in case you’re wondering whether this is anything more than a media circus to enhance thunberg’s self-importance, here’s another excerpt for you:
On Tuesday, Crosetto made a “last appeal” to flotilla members to accept a compromise proposal to drop aid in Cyprus and avoid a confrontation with Israeli forces. Flotilla representatives have repeatedly refused the offer.
Of course they have refused the offer. After all, if they drop the supplies off in Cyprus their media attention ends. So it’s a non-starter.
And the ultimate irony is that, if this flotilla ever did get to Gaza, who do these geniuses think would wind up with the supplies? Gazan civilians?
If they were honest about this, they’d call it The Terrorist Flotilla, because that’s who would get it all….
…but, on the positive side (for her, that is), greta thunberg gabor would continue to be famous for being famous, wouldn’t she?
So “mission accomplished”.
