DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ\’S DOG AND PONY SHOW: THE GRAND FINALE

Ken Berwitz

As you may be aware, Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), the Democratic National Committee Chair, who represents Florida\’s (disproportionately Jewish) 23rd district, announced today that she is supporting the Iran “deal”.
I did not see/hear her do so, but I read that it was a tortured decision which caused her to choke up with tears.
To which I reply – sorry for using the full word, but it is necessary this time – bullshit.
Here, in its entirety, is my blog of July 28th:

DEBBIE\’S DOG AND PONY SHOW

Ken Berwitz

Here is the first part of Debbie Wasserman Schultz\’s dog and pony show:  Her expression of grave misgivings about the nuclear “deal” to CNN\’s Wolf Blitzer – complete with her requisite attack on Republicans (which Wasserman Schultz would toss into any interview about anything, regardless of  its relevance):

WOLF BLITZER: Are you going to vote for this Iran nuclear deal? You\’re a member of the House.

DEBBIE WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: I\’m in the middle of really reviewing it and looking at all the moving parts to the Iran deal. I\’ve had many administration briefings. I\’ve talked to experts on both sides of the deal and I\’m going to go home and speak to my constituents who have been weighing in, and I\’ll reach a conclusion on what I\’m going to do with my vote once I feel like I\’ve been able to thoroughly review the whole deal.

BLITZER: So the president and his supporters haven\’t yet convinced you that it\’s a good deal?

WASSERMAN SCHULTZ: Well, I think there are – there\’s merit to the deal. There\’s a lot of merit to the deal, but there\’s also a legitimate cause for concern and I think this is a decision that no member of Congress should make lightly. You know, I found it particularly outrageous that you had some Republicans clearly who had not read the deal, who had not thoroughly examined it, who came out in less than 24 hours from this being announced in opposition to it. That\’s just not responsible, nor would it be responsible for me to come out in favor of it that quickly. I want to take my time. My constituents at home have very strong opinions. It\’s a very well-educated, pro-Israel district and I have respect from them and their opinion and I want to seek it while also making sure I though fully understand all its implications, and as a pro-Israel legislator myself, it\’s very, very important to get this right.

Translation:

I\’m going to play both sides of this.

OF COURSE I\’m going to support it.  I get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to chair the DNC, and I\’m not going to risk that, or risk the anger of Barack Obama.

But since I have tons of Jews in my district who think this is a terrible deal, I\’m going to pretend I\’m really on the fence about what I will do – which they\’ll almost certainly believe, since they\’re lifelong Democrats, mostly from the Northeast, who want to believe what a Jewish Democrat from New York like me says.

Then, after waiting a while to make them think I\’m pondering all the options, I\’ll tell them that, despite my grave misgivings, I will support the deal because it is the best of a series of bad choices, while assuring them that Republicans are a bunch of pigs and that, if the deal goes bad, Republican opposition will be the reason.

And the best part?  They\’ll fall for it like they always do.  No problem, no problem at all”.

Am I wrong about this?  Let\’s wait and find out.

It was obvious bullshit then, just as it is obvious bullshit now.
And please, please do not be impressed that I saw this coming.  Anyone who knows a thing about Debbie Wasserman Schultz could have written the same blog.
The most troubling part?  The odds are about 100,000 to 1 that, in 2016, the 23rd district will mind-numbingly vote her right back into office again anyway.
Pathetic doesn\’t even begin to describe it.
