A quick question for you: is it good news that the number of shootings (992) and murders (179) in Chicago so far this year is virtually identical to last year at this time?
Before you answer, consider the fact that a) last year’s total of shootings (3,550) and murders (762) was the highest total in 19 years, and b) it was dramatically higher than 2015’s total of 2,950 shootings and 480 murders.
So should we be horrified that this year’s total is replicating last year’s? Or thrilled that it has not taken a huge leap upward like it did last year?
And what should we think of Rahm Emanuel’s answer to this horrific scourge – which, as per every other year, is to rail about gun control – i.e. the currently near-impossible task of a Chicago citizen to legally obtain a gun.
The question I always ask – and never get an answer to – is what possible good can ever-stricter gun control laws do if virtually every murder involves an illegally obtained gun?
Fact: most murders in Chicago are gang related.
Fact: most gang-related murders take place among Black gangs, followed by Latino gangs.
Fact: these gangs make it almost impossible for decent people in primarily Black and Latino neighborhoods to provide a safe, productive environment for their families, for their children.
Now, tell me: How many gang-owned guns in these neighborhoods do you figure are legally owned?
And if the answer is few or none – which it, of course, is – then what possible good is adding more barriers to legal gun ownership going to do for those neighborhoods?
No, Chicago is not yet serious about doing a thing to stop the gun carnage. Chicago is not yet serious about helping the minority communities which are most affected by gun carnage.
If it was, it would not be expending its efforts and resources against legal gun ownership, it would be expending its efforts and resources against taking illegal guns off the streets and making minority neighborhoods safer for the decent people who live there.
I guess Rahm Emanuel and his people just don’t give a damn about them.
