Yesterday, during an exchange with a young woman at an event in New Hampshire, presidential candidate Joe Biden told her
“You’re a lying, dog-faced pony soldier.”
This generated laughter from some (by no means all) members of the audience which, presumably, was comprised of Biden supporters.
Was Biden serious? Did he mean it as an insult or a joke?
Let’s start with what I would hope to be the obvious: this was an insult regardless of whether it was meant as a joke. Telling a woman that she is a liar and has a dog-face is not funny, no matter how it was meant. Period.
If Donald Trump ever said that about a woman, he could go from here to eternity telling us it was meant in a joking way and no one would believe him. Why would those same words be treated differently when they come from Joe Biden – a man who has demonstrated several times already that he has no compunctions about insulting people at his rallies?
Further, several media venues (here’s one) are reporting that Biden has used this line in the past – against Republicans. And the insult intent was not at all in doubt.
Bottom line: Biden-supporting folks can pretend this was nothing but a cute little joke all they want. But the facts say otherwise.
It is another in the ongoing series of events that suggest Joe Biden, whatever his capabilities might have been in the past, is not fully in control of himself and should not be anywhere near the oval office.

NOTE: In this blog’s original form, I wrote that the expression Biden used came from a 1952 movie called “Pony Soldiers”. I have since learned it may not have come from that source, so I have removed the reference.
