A “CITIBANK” PHISHING SCAM

I get phony requests for verification from “Chase” all the time.  This is the first one I’ve gotten from “Citibank” – which just hit my email box:

Dear Customer,

Attention: Your Citibank Account have been disabled, Charges on your account may be limited until you verify your account.

Please visit our secure link below immediately to verify your account activity, You will be required to provide additional authentication.

Please Click Here Now For your account verification

We apologize for any inconvenience, but to ensure your account is safe, we may limit any further charges until we confirm the activity on your account is valid.

No, my Citibank Account haven’t been disabled (you’d think they’d check basic grammar on these scams).  And if I had a Citibank account which was disabled, this is not the way I or anyone else would be notified.

On the theory that I wasn’t singled out for this fraudulent attempt to get usable information, I would urge all readers to keep an eye out for similar “Citibank” phishing expeditions.

  • My primary care doctor recently joined (NJ) Atlantic Health System. Atlantic Health is a HUUUUuuuuGGGgggeeee entity – lotsa hospitals ‘n docs.
[In 2012, AHS listed 11,624 employees and 3,123 physicians. With 1,315 beds 70,743 admissions were registered. — Wikipedia]

Well, I got an email from them (do not reply, just fill out the form and click send). Wants my name, social security, date of birth, so they can register me for their on line patient communications. I can’t even contact them to ask if it is legitimate. [ Can you say Pfishing ?]

Turns out, my doctor’s office says the email is legit — even though it looks EXACTLY like a Pfish.

    • Zeke – If a doctor’s office puts out a legitimate email that looks like a phishing expedition, it is making a big mistake – not only because some people will, justifiably, assume it is not for real, but because it might make them more inclined to fill out the next fraudulent one that comes along

      • Ken – the . ‘looks-like-a-pfish’ . email was sent by the humongous Atlantic Health System.
It’s all part of the ERS – electronic records system in health care.

The purpose of ERS is to provide employment for the folks who brought you Department Store Billing a generation ago.
