WILLIE RANDOLPH

Forget politics for this one post…

…and join me in congratulating Willie Randolph, the great second baseman for, then third base coach of, the New York Yankees (yes, he played a few years for other teams, but like Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson, he will always be known as a Yankee).

Today, before the Old Timers\’ day ceremony, a plaque was dedicated in Mr. Randolph\’s honor, which will be placed in Yankee Stadium\’s Monument Park…the hallowed ground behind center field.  ,

Then, accompanied by his beautiful family – four generations of them – he accepted that plaque by making as gracious and sincere a speech as you will ever hear.

The speech was too long, and somewhat repetitive.  But the reason was that Mr. Randolph did not come with a prepared speech.  Every word that came out of his mouth first traveled through his heart.

What a classy, humble, man this is.  He told us how lucky he was to have been a Yankee…and, all the while, I was thinking how lucky the Yankees were to have been his team.

Congratulations, Willie.  You were the best.  And you still are.
