Remember when someone cared who Time Magazine named as its “Person of the Year”?
Strains your memory a bit, doesn\’t it?
I watched the Today Show this morning, and they had Time\’s Managing Editor, Nancy Gibbs, on, to announce the winner.
First, let me tell you who it isn\’t:
-It isn\’t Donald Trump who, like him or don\’t, is changing politics in this country and has received nonstop media coverage for the past half year.-It isn\’t Pope Francis, who has spent this year transforming the Catholic church, in highly controversial ways which I suspect do not sit well with a great many of the faithful.been media\’s overwhelming choice for lead story material.-It isn\’t ISIS (yes, Time sometimes awards the honor to organizations rather than individuals) or its head “man”, despite the fact that it has grown into an international terrorist behemoth which is changing the course of history.-It isn\’t Barack Obama, whose absentee presidency, and refusal to make good on his own “red line” threats, is largely responsible for the exponential growth of ISIS.
Nope, it isn\’t any of them. The winner is….
Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany.
The reason, according to Ms. Gibbs, is that Ms. Merkel opened Germany to a ton of refugees – make that “Syrian” refugees or anyone who claimed to be – and managed the European Union\’s debt crisis (a crisis which still is very much in existence),
In other words, Chancellor Merkel leapfrogs everyone else because she is letting in lots of refugees (as if no other countries let in lots of refugees?) and is managing a debt crisis with no decisive success or failure.
Huh?????
The title of this blog is “Why Time Magazine Is Irrelevant”. What you just read, I would think, provides the answer.
