WHEN I STOP READING…

Why do I sometimes just give up and just stop reading an article?  Let me give an example.

Here is the first sentence of Gabriel Sherman\’s article in New York Magazine:

In the fallout since the first GOP debate, Fox News chairman Roger Ailes has found himself caught between Donald Trump, who has the full backing of Fox\’s misogynist audience, and Megyn Kelly, the star anchor whom Ailes has nurtured and sees as the key to reaching younger viewers.

“Fox\’s misogynist audience”?  The millions and millions of Fox viewers – more than CNN and MSNBC combined – are all a bunch of women haters?  Does that apply to the 24 million who watched the debate Megyn Kelly co-hosted last week too?

And how does that explain the fact that Kelly – who no one is likely to mistake for a guy – is overwhelmingly preferred on her 9:00PM time slot to both the male Anderson Cooper on CNN and the female Rachel Maddow on MSNBC?

The latest data I have seen, (from Tuesday, just two days ago) show Kelly with a viewership of 2, 678,000 – almost four times as much as Maddow\’s 757,000 and five times as much as Cooper\’s 537,000.  That\’s a pretty strange way to show misogyny.

When I read a first sentence like that,  I usually assume that the rest of the article is likely to be just as gratuitously ridiculous, and therefore usually decline to waste my time reading it.

There\’s your answer.
