No, that title is not a goof. And since this comes to us from NPR’s web site, I am assuming it is researched and presumed to be true. According to Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson’s article:
One of the founders of Hungary\’s far-right Jobbik Party has discovered he is Jewish, and that his grandmother is an Auschwitz survivor. Now, he keeps kosher, attends synagogue and visits Israel.
Oops….
The article goes on to interview the person in question, who has the unfortunate name (at least for my spell-check), Csanad Szegedi. His story is a very interesting one, and well worth your while to read.
In the immortal words of Red Buttons (who always knew he was Jewish) “Strange things are happening……”

my former father-in-law – also coincidentally a Jew from Hungary – intimated that he had long ago become aware of certain very valid reasons (i suspect regarding bolshevism) why he would rather not be associated with Judaism any longer – so he and his wife converted – very sincerely i might add – to Catholicism.
Conversions, for a wide variety of reasons, happen all the time, both into and out of various religions.
An example similar to your own family’s experience is John Kerry’s grandparents, who converted from Judaism to Catholicism (a lot of people believe Kerry is an ancestrally Irish name…in fact, it was his grandparents’ Anglicization of the name “Kohn”).
I blogged about Szegedi because it is so bizarre that learning of his ancestry caused him to immediately convert and embrace Judaism – not from a starting point of indifference to the religion, but from one of hating it.
