Today is December 24th. Christmas eve.
It has been 137 days since Michael Brown was shot and killed by Police Officer Darren Wilson. There have been protests over the death of Brown – and, subsequently, Eric Garner – ever since.
The most ubiquitous tag line currently being used by the protesters is “Black Lives Matter”.
But do they? Do the protesters actually give a damn about Black lives?
Before you answer, consider the following:
-In an average day, 19 Black people are murdered in the USA – 18 of them by other Blacks, with a disproportionate percentage of both murderers and victims being young Black men. Just like Michael Brown.
-That means, over the past 137 days about 2,603 Black people have been murdered, 2,466 of them by other Black people. And most of them have been young Black males. In point of fact, the single greatest cause of death among Black males 20 – 24 is gun violence.
Have you seen any protest marches about those lives?
Have you heard any angry crowds chanting “What do we want? Black people to stop killing other Black people”?
If “Black Lives Matter” to the protesters, you would be seeing those marches and hearing that kind of chant.
But if their true slogan is “Black Lives Matter…Only When White Cops Shoot Them. Otherwise We Don\’t Give A Damn”? Then the protests make perfect sense just as they are.
There\’s a harsh reality to face here, that some people are either too partisan, too scared, or too ashamed to face.
It\’s time we all did.
