UNILATERAL “IMMIGRATION REFORM”: IS IT POLITICAL SUICIDE?

How damaging would it be for President Obama to do another of his unilateral “we can\’t wait” routines by declaring he is going to bypass the constitution again, and implement his idea of “Immigration Reform”?

Well, if the latest Investors Business Daily poll is accurate, it would be politically suicidal – not for Mr. Obama (he\’s not going to be running for anything again), but for most of the Democrat Party\’s candidates this November.

Read this excerpt from John Merline\’s article at IBD, and see why:

Accordingto the latest IBD/TIPP poll, 73% of the public say Obama should workwith Congress on reforms. Just 22% say he should “sidestepCongress and act on his own using executive orders” – something the president has repeatedly pledged to do.

Amongindependents, 78% say Obama should work with Congress, with only 19%saying he should go it alone. Even among Democrats, only 39% sayObama should act unilaterally, while 54% say he should work withCongress.

Anothertrouble sign for Obama: The age group most fervently opposed to himon immigration is the young voters he has successfully courted in thepast. Fully 80% of those age 18 to 24 want him to work with Congresson reform, and just 15% side with Obama\’s plan to bypass Congress ifthey fail to act.

So-calledblue states that voted for Obama are also more likely to want him towork with Congress to get immigration reform done than are red states(74% to 72%).

Let\’s see:

-73% of the overall public says don\’t do it.

-78% of independents – who Democrat must attract to hold the Senate – say don\’t do it.

-80% of young voters – who usually lean Democrat, but may be disproportionately affected by having to compete with illegals for jobs – say don\’t do it.

-And even “blue” (majority Democrat) states say don\’t do it.

Do you need me to tell you that if the President ignores all this – and Barack Obama being Barack Obama, it is an excellent likelihood he will – it can be political suicide for his party?

I assume most Republicans are salivating at the thought of President Obama declaring unilateral “immigration reform” as soon as possible – on the grounds that, since he is going to do it anyway, and the public is so emphatically against it, the timing is exponentially better for them if it happens before voters cast their ballots in the midterm elections.

Just as I assume most Democrats are foaming at the mouth thinking about what a disaster it will be, for exactly the same reasons.

The bottom line?  Barring a terrorist attack (which I assume we\’re all rooting for Mr. Obama to do his best to prevent), this well might be the single biggest issue of the 2014 election.

Stay tuned.
