This one hit me from out of nowhere.
Tony Gwynn, the great, great Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer and one of the true gentlemen of the sport – an endangered species if there ever was one – has died of cancer in Poway, California, at the far-too-young age of 54.
Mr. Gwynn, who spent his entire 20 year career with the San Diego Padres, was a career .338 hitter – one of the 15 or so best lifetime batting averages in modern major league history. He won 8 batting titles and played on both of the Padres\’ world series teams.
But he was a great deal more than that. By all accounts, Tony Gwynn was a wonderful man, who lit up any room he ever walked into.
It is sad to lose highest-quality people, in or out of sports. And we have lost one today.
May Tony Gwynn rest in peace.
