THE QUOTE OF THE DAY

Today’s quote comes to us from North Carolina Governor, Pat McCrory.

Governor McCrory has had the state file a lawsuit against the Department of Justice, over its threats to, among other things, withhold federal funds if North Carolina does not rescind its “common sense privacy policy” – which essentially says that if you have a penis, use the men’s room and if you have a vagina, use the women’s room.

Mr. McCrory’s reaction:

“The Obama administration is bypassing Congress by attempting to rewrite the law and set restroom policies for public and private employers across the country, not just North Carolina. This is now a national issue that applies to every state and it needs to be resolved at the federal level. They are now telling every government agency and every company that employs more than 15 people that men should be allowed to use a women’s locker room, restroom or shower facility.”

Personally, I sympathize with people who are truly transgender.  It takes a tortured human being to honestly believe that his/her genital area and brain are out of sync with each other.

And I strongly suspect that at least some people who are truly transgender have, quietly and without fanfare, been using opposite sex bathrooms for some time.

But the existence of this tiny population segment, however personally tortured, does not mean that we should legally institutionalize that there can be no gender privacy in a bathroom anymore.  What about the rights of everyone else?

A transgender person is going to be just as tortured peeing and crapping in one gender’s bathroom as the other’s.  That is not going to change.

But using his/her “rights’ to the opposite sex bathroom creates a condition where every sexual predator in the country can say “I’m transgender”, then get off on being in the opposite sex bathroom – which is a lot more significant to me than where a transgender person pees and craps.

I have a six year old granddaughter.  If she has to go to the bathroom, I do not want to be put in the position of watching some guy heading in with her, and telling me, “I’m transgender, you can’t prove I’m not, so if you don’t like it go eff yourself” — and, unless I pretend to also be transgender, I have to stand outside and hope all he’s doing is relieving himself; not exposing himself to her, reaching a phone over the bathroom stall to take pictures of her, or worse.

Simply stated, this is nuts.

Governor McCrory wins Quote Of The Day honors for having his state file this suit.  The fact that I also agree with his reasoning – including the fact that, because the DOJ has stuck itself into the middle of this, it is now a national rather than one-state issue – is another reason…but the lesser of the two as far as I’m concerned.
