THE QUOTE OF THE DAY

Today\’s quote comes to us from Mike Huckabee, former Governor of Arkansas, more recently host of a show on Fox News Channel, and currently candidate for the Republican presidential nomination.

Here is what Mr. Huckabee has to say about today\’s Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage:

“The Supreme Court has spoken with a very divided voice on something only the Supreme Being can do-redefine marriage. I will not acquiesce to an imperial court any more than our Founders acquiesced to an imperial British monarch. We must resist and reject judicial tyranny, not retreat.”

To which I reply:  ????????????????????????????

What acquiescence are you talking about, Mr. Huckabee?  What are you refusing to do?  Marry another guy?

Well, here\’s the news.  No one is forcing you to marry another guy.  No one is even asking you to.  And I doubt that most other guys would be especially enticed by the prospect.

What you are demanding is that guys who do want to marry other guys, and women who do want to marry other women, should acquiesce to your personal religious and moral beliefs.

Why should they do that, Mr. Huckabee?  Why should your religious and moral beliefs, however sincerely felt, inform anyone\’s life but your own?

Let me put this another way:  if same sex couples are allowed to marry, they gain the right to legally commit themselves to one another.  You don\’t lose a thing.  Your rights are not diminished; they remain 100% intact. What changes is that, now, other people have the rights you\’ve had all along.

I award Mike Huckabee Quote Of The Day honors for this latest entry in his series of asinine comments about same-sex marriage that make no sense at all, because I appreciate being given so easy an opportunity to refute it.

Thank you for that, Mike.
