THE PARAGRAPH OF THE DAY

Usually I put up the Paragraph Of The Day first, and then tell you why it won.

This time I am telling you why it won first:  because, for just a minute or so, it was the absolute funniest paragraph I have read this month, maybe this year.

From Ian Deitch\’s article for the Associated Press:

Thousands of bare-chested muscular men, drag queens in heavy makeup and high heels, women in colorful balloon costumes and others partied at Tel Aviv\’s annual gay pride parade on Friday, the largest event of its kind in the region.

The largest event of its kind in the region??????????????????

Maybe Mr. Deitch would be so kind as to give us the numbers on Tel Aviv\’s competition….

How many people, do you suppose, participate in gay pride marches among the four countries which border Israel:  Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria?   How about gulf states like Saudi Arabia?  Kuwait?  Qatar?  Abu Dhabi?  Any of the others?

I\’ll give you a hint.  If you are reading this blog by yourself, the readership on your computer includes one more person than the gay pride marches of every one of those countries combined.

That is why I found the paragraph so funny…for about a minute.

But then I remembered that, somehow, media keep forgetting Israel is the one and only free country in the entire region.  The one and only democracy.  The one and only place where people, whether homosexual or heterosexual, have the ability to be themselves.

Then the paragraph wasn\’t so funny after all.
