Last month, this country elected Donald Trump President over Hillary Clinton.
In so doing, it chose a political novice with a fragile ego and a big, uncontrollable mouth who talked about secure borders and jobs, over an eminently familar political figure who ran on a platform of open borders, “global” trade deals that resulted in jobs flying out of this country and the identity politics of gender and race.
In other words, the middle won over the left.
And this week the middle won over the left at Hampshire College in Massachusetts as well.

Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. will once again fly the American flag on campus, at full-staff, administrators announced Friday.
The announcement reverses a decision to remove the flag that made the school a subject of protest and ridicule for the past two weeks.
Hampshire initially placed its on-campus flag at half staff following President-elect Donald Trump’s surprise victory in the election. But several student activists agitated for the flag to be removed entirely, saying it represented oppressive forces like the police and the U.S. military.
Then, the night before Veterans Day, an unknown person took down the flag and burned it. The school put another flag up for Veterans Day, but a few days later announced it was taking the flag down indefinitely.
There are people who will tell you that both of these events are a win for the right wing over the rest of the country. They will be wrong.
While it is true that the right wing is happy about them, it could not have made either event happen.
No, Donald Trump’s win and Hampshire College being shamed/ridiculed into putting the country’s flag back on campus, are wins for the middle of this country over the left, which has become so used to “winning”, for so long, that a great many within it think they are the country.
As the left pushes harder and harder to turn the United States into….who knows what, they have finally managed to wake up the middle. The mainstream. Everyday working people people who have reached the breaking point. Who are up to here with being blamed for every high crime and misdemeanor, real and imagined, that the left can think of, and then being told to subsidize the same people who sneer and dismiss them.
If Donald Trump’s win, and Hampshire College’s reversal are indicators that this decades-long trend has finally peaked, and is now falling back? Good.
It’s about time.
