As you probably know by now, former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen have been convicted of a number of different counts of corrupton: 11 for McDonnell and 8 for his wife, who also was convicted on one count of obstruction of justice
As I\’m sure is no surprise, both McDonnells say they will appeal (though, since one of the cornerstones of their defense, bizarrely enough, was that their marriage was in tatters, I would assume the two will go their separate ways appeals-wise).
The charges stem from then-Governor McDonnell\’s relationship with Jonnie R. Williams, well-heeled Richmond businessperson, who, based on the convictions shtupped them with a variety of goods and services – six figures\’ worth – in return for getting favorable treatment on issues a Governor could have influence on.
I admit that, with everything else going on in the world, I did not follow this trial closely. But I will try to keep up when the appeal process starts.
My take on it is about as basic as it gets: let\’s hope that the legal process gets it right – i.e. if this is a bad verdict, overturn it, and if it is a correct verdict, off to jail for the two of them. And, based on their defense, I wouldn\’t bet on any conjugal visits either.
