THE MAZI MELESA PILIP/TOM SUOZZI CONGRESSIONAL RACE

Mazi Melesa Pilip is a Republican, currently serving as a member of the legislature in Nassau County, New York…and the Republican candidate in a special electdion for New York’s 3rd congressional district.

Ms. Pilip is trying to replace Republican George Santos, the non-stop liar who won in 2022 by misrepresenting just about every facet of his life to voters and fooling enough of them to put him in office, until he was expelled/ousted by a bipartisan vote in December.

Her opponent is former three-term congressperson Tom Suozzi.

Given the circumstances which caused this house seat to become available – i.e. Santos’ lying – it is fascinating that Mr. Suozzi is now lying about Ms. Pilip’s position on abortion.  The New York airwaves are saturated with an ad suggesting that Pilip refuses to answer questions about abortion, but is supported by people who want a national ban, including abortions for rape and incest.

You are supposed to believe that is her position and, therefore, unless you are against all abortion under all circumstances, should be voting against her.

Is it true?

In answer, please read this excerpt from Matthew Kassel’s article for jewishinsider.com:

While Pilip had dodged a question from a reporter asking for her position on a national abortion ban last week, the Nassau County legislator — who has focused largely on defending Israel and supporting the police during her time in office — expressed no hesitation in explicitly opposing the prohibition in the interview on Monday, amid mounting criticism from Democratic groups over her initial response.

“Abortion is a very personal decision, OK?,” Pilip told JI. “Now, I am a religious person, I have seven children, so I am pro-life. However, I’m not going to push my own beliefs on any woman. Therefore, I’m not going to support a national abortion ban.”

Does that look like Mazi Melesa Pilip is against all abortions to you?  Or does it look like she opposes abortion as a personal matter and will not impose her beliefs on others?

Ironic, isn’t it, that Tom Suozzi, in an effort to replace a serial liar in the House of Representatives, has approved an ad that seems so clearly to be lying about his opponent?

That said, however, Pilip is far from non-problematic herself.  For example, she was outwardly supportive of Santos until the latter part of his misbegotten congressional career.  And Suozzi is correct to say that she has not made herself as available to interviews/scrutiny as she should.

The election will be held on February 13, about two and a half weeks from now.  Democrats – who always seem to have more money (aren’t Republicans supposed to be the rich ones) – have, so far, spent about triple what Republicans have on advertising for this campaign.

Given the disparity in advertising dollars, and the fact that Pilip is both saddled with Santos and being lied about on the key abortion issue, my bet would be on Suozzi winning.  But it is very, very far from a sure thing.

See me on February 14th.  We’ll talk.
