Earlier today I blogged that late night host jimmy kimmel acted like a horse’s ass by making disgusting remarks about the murder of Charlie Kirk.
I stand by that opinion.
However…
…I find the fact that his network, ABC, has reacted by “indefinitely” removing his show from the air to be a terrible decision that, I wish, it had never made.
Yes, kimmel made a couple of exceedingly stupid/provocative comments. But what of it? Is this the first time he has done so? Of course not. And isn’t it true that, in the course of trying to be funny, other hosts, both late night and prime time, have done the same? Of course it is.
The fact that some people – like me – find what kimmel said about Charlie Kirk’s murder especially disgusting doesn’t mean his show should be pulled. I have no doubt things are said on-air that I’m OK with, but other people are appalled by. Should their shows be pulled too? Where does it end?
And – let’s be honest here – a lot of the reason that the kimmels, and the colberts, and the gutfelds, etc. are featured on their networks is because they provide edgy, and sometimes over-the-edge, comments. It is more than a little disingenuous for ABC to “prove” its moral standards by cherry-picking these particular ones.
Bottom line? As much as I dislike and disrespect jimmy kimmel, his show should not have been suspended.
