As should have been expected, Matt Epps, the interim incumbent congressperson from Tennessee’s 7th district, won yesterday’s special election to hold the seat from the remainder of the current term.
Despite large amounts of money pumped in by Democrats to defeat him, and despite what looks to me like a very suspiciously inflated deficit in Davidson County (Trump lost Davidson by 27% but Epps lost by 56%!!), The margin over Democrat challenger Aftyn Behn was a comfortable 9%.
Yes, it is true that Donald Trump won this congressional district by 22% last year, so the argument can be made that this is much closer than it should have been.
But what most of our media conveniently forget to mention is that, in 2024, Tennessee was a sure-Republican state (Trump won by 30%), so Democrats put little if any resources there. If they had put the kind of money into last year’s presidential election that they did in this congressional election, Trump would have won anyway, but presumably by a lower amount. Ditto for Davidson county in particular.
So taking everything into account, the bottom line here is that Matt Epps won, with room to spare, and the funds paid out to defeat him did not change the result.
I can’t wait to see how media will report this….asssuming they have time to talk about it instead of the terrible world-class scandal that our military hit a narcotics-filled boat not once, but twice.
