There were no major surprises in yesterday’s primaries, but there is one race that is still undecided and will be won or lost on mail-in ballots; the Democrat primary for Governor of Wisconsin, which pitted socialist, Israel-hating hardliner Frances Hong against moderate (relative to Hong, certainly) David Crowley.
As things now stand – with about 98% of the votes counted – Crowley leads Hong by roughly 3,000 votes. Mail-in ballots will decide who actually won.
The key takeaway, though, is that Crowley is anywhere near winning this primary. The polls, as recently as last week showed Hong way ahead:
- The State Navigate poll had Hong ahead by 22%
- Public Policy Polling had Hong ahead by 18%
If this were just a one-time fluke, we could laugh it off as bad polling.
But last week, despite socialist Israel-hater Abdul El-Sayed leading Haley Stevens by double digits in Michigan’s Democrat senate primary polls (the last one I saw – the Zenith poll – gave him a 19% advantage) he barely eked out a primary win by less than 1%.
Maybe we can laugh this one off too. Maybe it’s just a strange anomaly that two sets of primary results, both showing the socialist, Israel-hating candidate way ahead, resulted in far less positive results.
But maybe we can’t. Maybe the reality is that socialist, Israel-hating candidates may do well in primary polling, but when Democrat voters go to the polls there is a major shift away from them.
If so, it means that Democrats have a huge – maybe insurmountable – problem with el-sayed as their Senate candidate in Michigan, with Hong if she wins the Wisconsin Governor primary, and with other contests in which Democrats are either fielding socialist, Israel-hating candidates or are supporting such candidates.
And if that is the case, Democrats can kiss their hopes of retaking the Senate goodbye; maybe their hopes of winning the House as well.
Is it time for them to panic?
If I were a Democrat operative, it would be for me.
