In the 1960’s, Berkeley was considered the birthplace of the “Free Speech Movement.” Mario Savio was its most visible leader.
It’s premise was very simple. People had a right to freely express their opinions. Even if they were unpopular and even if other people strongly disagreed.
Mr. Savio was not a well man. He had major heart problems, and passed away in 1996. But if he is looking down and seeing what “Free Speech” means in Berkeley today, he probably considers himself an honorary member of The Grateful Dead – not for the music, but because he would be happy not to have lived to see this day.
Click here to see video of what happened today when supporters of Donald Trump tried to hold a rally in Berkeley.
Note the anarchists, dressed in their “uniforms” of black clothes, hoods and masks (think of ku klux klan outfits with a different color.)
Note the isolating of individual Trump supporters and the gang-beatings being administered.
Then tell me where you think the “Free Speech Movement” has gone.
It must be somewhere else. Because it certainly is not in Berkeley – now the home of the “My Speech – Not Yours” movement.
