Last night, my beautiful bride and I celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary, by going to what we both consider the best fish/seafood restaurant in Manhattan: the Aquagrill, at Spring Street and 6th Avenue (that\’s Avenue of the Americas to tourists and some younger-New Yorkers, but still 6th Avenue to New York-raised people our age).
The food was, in a word, fabulous.
For appetizers, I had the fennel soup with shrimp. She had the cod cakes, which came in a salad with an amazingly delicious dressing.
For mains, I had the Chilean sea bass in some kind of miso sauce. The best I have ever had anywhere. She had the scallops, which were so tasty and flavorfully seasoned that I don\’t know how they could have been better.
Dessert? We shared a mango tart that – excuse the cliche – was to die for.
The service was wonderful: attentive, informational and helpful. As always – with a special thanks to “Chintzia” (I\’m sure I\’m misspelling her name, but that\’s the phonetic equivalent), originally from Milan, who treated us to prosecco when, while chatting with her, we mentioned in passing (not intending to get anything out of it) that it was our anniversary. The prosecco was nice, but the gesture was even nicer.
And, given the restaurant\’s quality, prices were not at all expensive. Main dishes – even the specialty dishes – are mostly in the $20 – $28 range.
Then, of course, there is the fact that The Aquagrill is in the SoHo/West Village area – loaded with shops, restaurants and just about every kind of humanity there is – which makes it great to walk through; especially in the beautiful weather we were lucky enough to have last night.
If you\’re going to spend a night with your best friend, your true love, or just about the best person you ever met in your life – someone you consider yourself lucky to be with – this is the way to do it.
And since my wife is all three, that made the night perfect.
