You couldn’t make this up if you tried.
A banana, duct-taped to a canvas, has sold for $5.2 million dollars at auction.
This “artwork” was created – I’m sure it took months and months of intense planning – by an “artist” named Maurizio Cattelan. He named it “Comedian” – which is what I would have called anyone who tried to sell a duct-taped banana at any price until I read about this one.
Can’t believe it? Certain it is some kind of parody/it cannot be even remotely possible? I’d agree completely…if it didn’t happen. And it did.
Here, see for yourself:
Personally I can buy a banana at the local Shop-Rite supermarket for about 25 cents…and a large roll of heavy-duty duct tape – enough to tape hundreds of bananas to canvases – at Walmart for $12.99
I guess I’m just a thrifty shopper. Or art patron. I’ll let you decide which.
I hope the new owner is pleased as punch with such an amazing purchase. And if you meet this person, please advise him/her that I have a rutabaga duct-taped to our welcome mat that I’m willing to part with for $2.6 million – 50% off.
