Months ago, if you believed national political polls (i.e. if you were sufficiently gullible), Joe Biden was the prohibitive favorite to win the Democrat presidential nomination.
Weeks ago, in the unholy mess that was Iowa’s caucuses, he finished a pour fourth.
Last week, in the New Hampshire primary, he finished fifth. His showing was so poor he didn’t even stick around for primary night.
Now we have Nevada and South Carolina looming.
In Nevada – like Iowa, a caucus state – the one poll I have seen, for whatever it’s worth, has him losing to Bernie Sanders.
And then there is South Carolina – the last state before March 3 – the 14-state “Super Tuesday”. A state where, unlike the other three, there is a very large Black primary vote (in 2016, Black voters accounted for about 60% of that vote).
This is it. This is his true firewall. If Biden, whose candidacy is predicated on electability, does not do well, he can kiss his presidential hopes goodbye.
So how’s he doing there? In a word, lousy.
The latest (Quinnipiac) poll has Biden losing to Bernie Sanders by 25% to 17%. Just two weeks before, this same poll had him ahead of Sanders by 26% to 21%; a 13% turnaround.
If this poll is anywhere near accurate, South Carolina is Joe Biden’s waterloo.
And, based on how he has done so far – i.e. underperforming everywhere – it’s hard not to believe that will be the way of things.
That said, I have little doubt that, even if he loses Nevada and South Carolina, Biden will slog on to Super Tuesday in the hope that it, somehow, can resurrect what clearly is his final try for the Oval Office. And I have little doubt that, if he does, he will be further embarrassed by the results.
Simply stated, it’s over.
The one “victory” in all this belongs to Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, adam schiff and Jerrold Nadler. They tried an impeachment and it appears to be resoundingly successful.
The problem is, they got rid of the wrong guy.
And unless things change (i.e. unless they can screw him over the way they did in 2016) this bunch will have managed to replace Biden with Bernie Sanders – a 78 year old socialist, Jewish by birth but anti-Israel by choice (that should thrill Jewish voters), anti-Wall Street (that should thrill big donors), who has a heart condition…and who wasn’t even registered as a Democrat until he decided he wanted to run for President.
Great job, guys. Lots of luck running that campaign.
