POLICE CHIEFS MATTER

Ken Berwitz

How would you feel if the police chief where you live posted this message on social media:

“[T]his Black Lives Matter group is nothing more thanan American born terrorist group brought on by the lie of the hands up don’tshoot during the criminal thug Michael Brown incident. The FBI and otherGovernment Law Enforcement groups need to step up and put a stop to this.

“…When a blackthug is killed by police they are all over it as is Mr. Barack Obama. Howeverwhen a police officer white, black or any race is murdered for doing his jobthe media is short with its reporting or not at all. When a white person iskilled by a black officer you hear nothing. Has our so called President spokepublicly about these murders of police officers by blacks, HELL NO he has not.Step up Mr. President, or step down because we do not need you.

“… I have instructedmy officers to be vigilant, if threatened take appropriate action. If thatmeans shoot a thug, then do it and answer for it while you are still alive andnot dead. Law enforcement is fed up with this murderous society who want totake out those who protect and serve.”

What is your reaction to this statement?  Do you disagree with anything about it?

Well, the Town Manager of Surf City, North Carolina, where Mike Halstead was Police Chief, posted it on September 3, disagreed.  And Halstead has summarily been forced out of his job.

A North Carolina police chief says he was forced to retireafter an anti-Black Lives Matter Facebook post.

WECT-TV reports Surf City Police Chief Mike Halsteadretired effective immediately after calling the movement a “terrorist group” and that President Barack Obama has brought about a race problem in the U.S.

“He put that informationout, that was intended for his friends and colleagues and peers, but it was apublic statement and there are people that were offended,” Surf City TownManager Larry Bergman told WECT.

“I had to beg for a 60 day severance tofeed my family,” Halstead wrote. “That was the thanks that I got from those Ithought were family, I was thrown under the bus for expressing my 1st amendmentrights and speaking the truth and concerns for law enforcement.”

“There are people that were offended?????????

Are you offended by what Mr. Halstead said?  I know I\’m not.  Nor can I find any reason that Mike Halstead was forced to resign.

I don\’t know where that “offended” claim came from – whether it was Larry Bergman or Surf City Mayor Zander Guy.  But I know damn well that both of them should be ashamed of what they\’ve done.

On the other hand, chalk it up as a victory for those fiercely non-discriminatory, peace-loving, police-loving folks at #blacklives matter.  And to our wonderful “neutral” media, without whom #blacklivesmatter would already have ceased to exist.
