DONALD TRUMP AS A THREE-LEGGED CHICKEN

Ken Berwitz

Last night, my wife and I spent a really enjoyable Friday evening with our friends Lynn and John (no surprise at all – we always have a really enjoyable time with them).  The guacamole was nice and spicy, the salmon was great, and John and I beat our wives three out of three times in scrabble …..  oh, wait, they won two out of three.  Never mind.

Anyway, though most of the conversation was about family, John and I did discuss politics for a few minutes.  And, not surprisingly, the talk turned to Donald Trump, who, while still leading in polls, is – it seems clear – starting to fade, as other “flavors of the month”, such as Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina, see their numbers grow.  (FYI:  in my opinion, none of the three has any chance to win the nomination, but it\’s fun to watch the so-called “pundits” try to make something of every new poll).

One of the things we hit on was why someone like Trump – whom I have referred to in other blogs as the world\’s richest barroom loudmouth – had so completely dominated media coverage all summer (though now they apparently are tiring of his act and starting to move on).

We agreed that it had less to do with any substance to what Trump said, than the fact that he was so loud, so blunt, so abrasive and so arrogant, that, even though these usually are considered negative attributes which would probably cause people to reject him in a voting booth, they commanded attention.

The way I put it was, “You wouldn\’t want to have a three-legged chicken as a pet.  But if you saw one, you\’d probably take a pretty good look at it.

John thought that was a pretty good explanation of why people are attracted to Donald Trump but would not vote for him if he actually won the nomination.  So I have put it in this blog.

Now let\’s see if I\’m right and Trump\’s numbers drop, while others – Carson and Fiorina for a short time, then the A-team candidates – rise.
