DEAR NEW YORK TIMES

Dear New York Times;

The radical islamist terrorist who shot up that restaurant in Dhaka, Bangladesh did not scream “God Is Great”.

They screamed “Allahu Akbar”.

How nice of you to translate it into English, though, so you could sanitize what they said and make it seem less like what radical Islamists would say.

I’m sure ISIS, which has taken “credit” for the attack, is most appreciative.

Sincerely,

Ken Berwitz

  • Although newspapers often translate the phrase as “God is great,” the proper translation is actually “God is greater.” Muslims use the phrase “God is great”—substituting kabir (great) for akbar (greater).

    Ask yourself why it is mistranslated.
    Is their any difference between saying
    “God is great” and
    “God is greater” ?
