CLINTON FADES, A DEBATE MATERIALIZES

Ken Berwitz

What an amazing coincidence.

Just as Hillary Clinton is falling hopelessly behind in New Hampshre, and has fallen to where she is essentially tied with Bernard “Bernie Sanders in Iowa, the Democrat Party, which was happy to have had four debates – three of them on weekend evenings, thus guaranteed to depress viewership – has scheduled another one!!

Yes, folks, there will be another debate.  Just one week before the caucuses.  And not on a weekend, but on Monday evening Prime Time.

What network will the debate be on?  Democrat friendly CNN.  And who will moderate the debate?  Democrat super-friendly Chris Cuomo (Brother and Father both Democrat Governors of New York).

Amazing, isn\’t it?  Bernie Sanders, a 74 year old career politician, a self-described socialist who represents one of the smallest states in the country, and who didn\’t even identify as a Democrat until May of this year, is giving The Queen a serious run for her money.

That is why this “debate” (AKA The Hillary Remediation Project) has been cooked up.  A political Hail Mary if ever there was one.

But let\’s not minimize the danger for Ms. Clinton.  What if Mr. Sanders wins the debate (which most polls indicate he did in the previous ones), or at least holds his own?  What if, buttressed by a strong debate performance, he essentially ties or wins Iowa and, as seems virtually certain, wins New Hampshire as well?

Remember all those southern states where Hillary has big leads? Will a Hillary fade cause those leads to go bye-bye in a hurry?  It could very well happen.

Look, this could all work out well.  Ms. Clinton might excel in the new debate and outperform expectations when the votes are cast.  If that happens, in a few weeks she and her people may be solidly ahead, and laughing about how Sanders went pffft.

But it is just as possible that they will be looking at each other in disbelief wondering where it all went.

Stay tuned.
