CALLING THE UNRWA TO ACCOUNT (FINALLY!!)

The United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA).

This is the organization that, among other activities, oversees schools in Gaza; the schools that teach children, from elementary school on, a “curriculum” of hatred against and violence toward the state of Israel and Jews in general.

And now UNRWA is shocked – SHOCKED – that Israel, currently at war with Gaza because of the hatred and violence it has aided and abetted towards the country and its Jewish inhabitants, is calling it to account for being part of the reason…and that a few countries have joined Israel in doing so.

From  and  for Reuters:

An Israeli intelligence dossier that prompted a cascade of countries to halt funds for a U.N. Palestinian aid agency includes allegations that some staff took part in abductions and killings during the Oct. 7 raid that sparked the Gaza war.

The six-page dossier, seen by Reuters, alleges that some 190 UNRWA employees, including teachers, have doubled as Hamas or Islamic Jihad militants. It has names and pictures for 11 them.

The dossier was shown to Reuters by a source who could not be identified by name or nationality. The source said that it had been compiled by Israeli intelligence and shared with the United States, which on Friday suspended funding for UNRWA.

An Israeli official told Reuters the 190 mentioned in the dossier were “hardened fighters, killers” whereas overall some 10% of UNRWA staff were believed to have more general affiliation with Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

The agency employs 13,000 people in Gaza.

Asked about the dossier, a spokesperson for UNRWA said she could not comment due to an ongoing probe by the United Nations.

More than 10 countries, including major donors the United States and Germany, have halted their funding to the agency.

This is no surprise.  Not even a small one.  I have been writing about the UNRWA’s (and, more generally, about the equally deplorable United Nations’) animus toward Israel for years.  The only surprise is that these few countries have grown a conscience and acted appropriately.

Yes, it is true that a few (far from all) countries finally holding the UNRWA to account for its hate-Israel/hate Jews stance is way too little and way too late.  But even way too little/way too late is better than nothing/never.

I only wish I could believe it is the start of Israel getting anything near a fair shake from the UN.  But it will take a lot more to convince me.

I’ll let you know if that “a lot more” ever starts to materialize.
