#BLACKLIVESMATTER: REJECTING DEMOCRATS\’ OVERTURES

Ken Berwitz

It\’s hard to know which is more surprising; the fact that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) would make nice to a racist hate group like #blacklivesmatter, or that #blacklivesmatter would reject the legitimacy (more or less) that a connection to the DNC would give it.
From Barrett Holmes Pitner\’s article for dailybeast.com:

To the surprise of many within the Democratic establishment, the Black Lives Matter movement rebuffed the Democratic National Committee\’s resolution in support of the movement via a terse message posted to the group\’s official Facebook page on Monday.

“A resolution signaling the Democratic NationalCommittee\’s endorsement that Black lives matter, in no way implies anendorsement of the DNC by the Black Lives Matter Network, nor was it done inconsultation with us. We do not now, nor have we ever, endorsed or affiliatedwith the Democratic Party, or with any party. The Democratic Party, like theRepublican and all political parties, have historically attempted to control orcontain Black people\’s efforts to liberate ourselves. True change requires realstruggle, and that struggle will be in the streets and led by the people, notby a political party.”

Fascinating.  The DNC, no doubt hoping to solidify its standing as the party which aligns with mostly Black people – a tiny minority of them, let\’s never forget – taking to the streets and getting the most media attention, has been rebuffed. Pushed aside.  Now the DNC looks like a bunch of suckups who #blacklivesmatter saw right through….which, regardless of what you think of this group, is pretty much exactly right.
What will this mean to voting patterns on election day?  What will people, White and Black both, think about the DNC\’s action and #blacklivesmatter\’s reaction?  I don\’t know.  But I have a feeling the answer is going to materialize, possibly very quickly.
We\’ll see….
