APPROVAL/DISAPPROVAL BY PARTY: THE LATEST DATA

For whatever it’s worth, here are the latest approval/disapproval poll data for Republicans and Democrats by party.

From the just-released Quinnipiac Poll, which was conducted June 5 – 9, thus before most of the anarchy in Los Angeles (which has now spread to other cities as well):

Seventy percent of participants said they disapprove of how Democrats are handling their jobs in Congress, while 21 percent approve. Among Democrats, 53 percent disapprove, and 41 percent approve. Just 9 percent of Republicans approve of Democrats’ performance, while 84 percent disapprove.

The June poll found that 61 percent of participants disapproved of congressional Republicans’ handling of their jobs, while 32 percent approved. Among Republicans, 79 percent approve, and 13 percent disapprove. In contrast, only 2 percent of Democrats said they approve of Republicans’ handling of their jobs, with 97 percent disapproving.

The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

So what do we have here?

What we have is the fact that most people think both parties are not doing a good job.  That’s no surprise; every poll I have seen from every source in recent memory says this.

That said, however, the difference from one party to the other has to be troubling to Democrats.  Despite relentlessly negative media coverage for Trump and his people, about 50% more respondents (32% to 21%) approve of how Republicans are performing.  And 9% more (70% to 61%) disapprove of Democrats’ performance.

Let’s remember:  this is just one poll.  And political polls, in general, should be looked at with a grain – uh, let’s make that a shakerful – of salt.

But if I were a Democrat operative, these findings – especially because they barely take into account the anti-ICE anarchy which almost certainly will come down on their party – would be worrying me.

A lot.
