A VICTORY FOR TOM COTTON – AND THE COUNTRY

Remember a couple of weeks ago when Senator Tom Cotton (R-AK) wrote an open letter to Iran, telling its leadership that, without congress, the “deal” being cooked up by President Obama and Secretary Of State John Kerry was nothing but an executive agreement, thus fully revocable?

Remember that 47 Republican Senators signed it?

Remember that some (happy to say, far from all) Democrats started calling Senator Cotton and the other 46 Republicans “traitors” for putting information in the open letter that any Iranian leader with access to google and a minute or so to spare could have easily found online?

Remember that the House Of Representatives then put out a similar letter demanding congress be involved, which was signed by 367 out of 435 members – huge majorities in both parties?

Well, apparently it finally sunk in.  Because President Obama suddenly has agreed to legislation establishing that there will be congressional oversight for the “deal”.  Either that or he realized that enough Democrats were siding with the Republican (constitutional) position that congress has this authority so that, even if he vetoed the legislation, his veto would be overridden.

Personally I\’m betting on door #2.

Put another way, congress – Democrats and Republicans both – decided to make it clear that Barack Obama, much though he would like to be King, is still President – and therefore has to work with the other branches of government.

I suggest Mr. Obama think of it as a refresher course in constitutional law – something he once taught, but seems to have largely forgotten.

Is this a victory – a very important one – for Senator Tom Cotton and the Republican 46 – not to mention the country?

Are you kidding?
