A CLASSIC CASE STUDY IN MEDIA BIAS

Who is Elizabeth Lauten?  Who is Terry Bean?

Let\’s take them one at a time.

Elizabeth Lauten

Elizabeth Lauten was, until this week, a staff member for Stephen Fincher, and obscure congressperson from Tennessee.

But Ms. Lauten was forced to resign, after writing facebook comments that negatively reflected on President Obama\’s daughters, Sasha and Malia.  Lauten, apparently objecting to their clothing and general demeanor when standing near Mr. Obama as he spoke during the “turkey pardoning” before Thanksgiving, wrote “I get you\’r both in those awful teen years, but you\’re a part of the first family, try showing a little class. At least respect the part you play”, and also that they should “Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar”.

Lauten\’s comments were unnecessary and probably hurtful to the Obama daughters – something one mainstream media venue after another could not wait to tell us – always pointing out, right up front, that she was a Republican.   This includes the Washington Post, New York Times, LA Times, NY Daily News, CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox and countless other venues.

Terry Bean

Terry Bean is a wealthy left winger (no surprise there; plenty of left wingers are wealthy) and avid gay rights advocate (he founded the Human Rights Campaign) who has been a major contributor for President Obama – over $500,000 in 2012 alone – who has flown on Air Force 1 with the President and been in the White House with him.

The good news is that Mr. Bean has never, to my knowledged, wrote disparagingly about President Obama\’s daughter\’s.  The bad news, however, is that he and his ex-partner, Kiah Lawson, have been charged with sodomy and sex abuse, including with an underage (15 year old) boy.

An excellent article about Bean and his activities has been written by Michelle Malkin.  I strongly suggest you use the link and read it.

But if you\’re hoping to find out about Bean at some of the major media sites which were happy to cover Elizabeth Lauten, don\’t count on it.   A quick series of google searches shows me that the Washington Post did at least one story on Bean – but not a thing in the New York Times, or the LA Times, or on CBS, NBC or ABC.

So let\’s review:

-Elizabeth Lauten, an obscure staffer for an obscure congressperson, writes negatively about how President Obama\’s daughters presented themselves in public, and is attacked immediately throughout mainstream media, which make certain its readers/viewers are fully aware she is a Republican;

-Terry Bean, a wealthy left wing activist who heads a major gay rights organization, heavily contributes to President Obama, and has been on Air Force 1 and to the White House, is charged with raping an underage boy – among other things.  But coverage of this story – not just that Bean is a Democrat but the entire story – is a fraction of what it was for the obscure Republican staffer.

Could this be a more classic example of the bias which pervades our news coverage?

And the saddest part?  That so many of these paid propagandists actually believe they are journalists.
