I can’t say I agree with Seth Abramson all the time…or even most of the time – he tops out at “some”. And I don’t know that I agree with him here.
But I hope he is right.
Mr. Abramson’s latest piece for huffingtonpost.com, tells us – does not suggest the possibility, but tells us outright – that John Kasich will be the Republican presidential nominee.
He gives 8 reasons that this is going to happen. The key elements are that…
-Trump won’t get a majority of delegates,
-once delegates are no longer bound to vote for Trump they will flee from him,
-Ted Cruz is sufficiently disliked that he will not get enough of them for a majority either, and
-Marco Rubio will team up with John Kasich and throw his support to him in return for being selected as Kasich’s Vice President pick.
Regular readers will note that these are exactly the same elements I have written about – not as a prediction, but as a long-shot hope.
Here is Abramson’s #8 reason:
A Kasich/Rubio ticket would appeal to both mainstream Republicans (Kasich) and Tea Partiers (Rubio), to both white and Latino voters, to younger voters who want to see someone relatively young on the ticket, to those looking for a ticket whose members run the gamut from executive to legislative experience at both the state and federal levels, and to those who believe all members of a presidential ticket should hail from a major battleground state.
Yep.
Seth Abramson is no prophet. He may think he knows this will happen, but he does not.
That said, however, and with the understanding that I have some problems with John Kasich – mostly relating to his positions on social issues which are well to the right of my own – I very much hope Seth Abramson is right.
I would vote for John Kasich over the left wing, accomplishmentless liar Hillary Clinton, or the left wing, accomplishmentless socialist Bernie Sanders, 1,000 times out of 1,000.
