Maybe I’m just not understanding things well. But it seems to me that when Democrats accuse Republicans of shutting down the government, there is a simple, easy-to-understand, logical response:
“The bill we are trying to pass is exactly, 100% the same as the one that is presently in place. It is exactly, 100% the one that was passed on (date of the last budget approval). There is nothing different about it. If it is passed, we can negotiate areas that the two parties disagree on, but while we are doing so everyone is being paid.
“With one exception, EVERY REPUBLICAN IN THE SENATE VOTED IN FAVOR OF THIS BILL. And with just 3 exceptions ,EVERY DEMOCRAT IN THE SENATE VOTED AGAINST IT.
“As you can plainly see, Republicans are not shutting down the government, Democrats are. Any claim that Republicans – the ones voting for the bill – are responsible for shutting down the government is ridiculous.”
Why would this not be the answer every time a Democrat claims Republicans are responsible for the shutdown?
I don’t get it.
