Rep. robert garcia represents California’s 42nd congressional district. As a Democrat in a heavily Democrat district it is no surprise that last November’s election was little more than an afterthought – his margin of victory was 68% to 32% for the Republican.
That makes robert garcia a safe-seat Democrat. And safe-seat Democrats, who don’t have to worry about the consequences of their positions or their comments, are what is taking down the Democrat Party.
Last week I blogged about an outrageous – and dangerous – physical threat to Elon Musk by garcia. After first calling Musk a “dick” (his words, on TV), garcia then said “What the American public wants is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight. This is an actual fight for democracy, for the future of this country”.
Is it fair to say that garcia overtly threatened Elon Musk? Encouraged physical harm to him? If not, please tell me your interpretation of bringing actual weapons to a bar fight.
Not at all surprisingly, this overt threat is being taken seriously by the Trump administration. Edward Martin — the acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia sent a letter to garcia, which, according to Carl Gibson’s article for (hard-left) alternet.com, via msn.com, said:
“During a live interview with CNN, when asked how Democrats can stop Elon Musk, you spoke clearly: ‘What the American public wants is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight. This is an actual fight for democracy,'” Martin wrote, adding that Garcia had until Februrary 24, 2025 to respond. “This sounds to some like a threat to Mr. Musk – an appointed representative of President Donald Trump who you call a ‘d—‘ – and government staff who work for him. Their concerns have led to this inquiry.”
Garcia defended his comments, and retorted that “no reasonable person would view my comments as a threat.”
Incredible. garcia is saying that no reasonable person would view a comment that specifically calls for actual weapons to be used as a threat?????
Are you a reasonable person? If someone called you a dick and stated you should be fought with actual weapons would you feel threatened? I’m guessing the answer would be an emphatic yes. I know it would be for me.
(It should also be noted that Martin has sent a similar letter to safe-seat Senator Chuck Schumer over his threats, in 2020, to Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh over their rulings – “I want to tell you Gorsuch. I want to tell you Kavanaugh. You have released the whirlwind and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.” – after which an apparent attempt was made on Justice Kavanaugh’s life.)
I have written time and time again about the damage some safe-seat Democrats are wreaking on their party. How their comments and actions, while presenting no threat to their own re-election chances, are taking the overall party down. As you can see, this includes direct threats to the safety and well being of people they disagree with politically.
I wonder how much this affected last November’s election. Isn’t it possible – more than likely – that the garcias and the Schumers and the “squad” and others like them were a key reason that Trump not only regained the Presidency but got majorities in both houses as well?
But have they LEARNED from it?
If robert garcia – and the safe-seat Democrats like minority leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries who, even now, are telling their supporters to “take to the streets”is any indication, the answer so far is a resounding no.
