I assure you I do not think Donald Trump is a Democrat plant.
But I also assure you that his “value” to the presidential race is so beneficial to Democrats that he might as well be.
Read the first two paragraphs of Mona Charen\’s latest – excellent – column and see how she frames it:
President Obama seems on the verge of the most abject diplomatic capitulation in American history — to Iran, our bitterest enemy — and Republicans are arguing about Donald Trump? The prospect of a deal with Iran is dumbfounding and infuriating, as the U.S. held all the cards in the protracted negotiations and yet executed serial surrenders to the Iranians, rather like a courtier bowing his way backward from a monarch.
While the Obama administration is paving the way for a possible mushroom cloud over Tel Aviv or New York in the near term, we\’re all tying ourselves in knots about what Trump said about Mexicans. The Democrats seem to have a Trump card.
Does that resonate with you? It sure does with me.
There certainly is truth to some of what Donald Trump says – as crudely and indelicately as he says it. But his intrusion into the presidential race (and that\’s all it is: do not think for one minute he is actually running for President) is nothing more than a publicity stunt and a personal ego boost – which Trump can never get enough of. Do not believe the artificially high poll numbers, which are there only because he is making the most noise in a crowded field, and has co-opted conservative votes on a single issue.
Ms. Charen is right on target (as she usually is). Trump is an entertaining, but intrusive, obnoxious and annoying diversion from what this country should be talking about.
For the Obama administration, and Democrats in general, he is manna from heaven.
