According to Susan Haigh and Pat Eton-Robb\’s article for the Associated Press, Connecticut, whose Democrat-dominated legislature has just passed a new round of taxes guaranteed to inhibit businesses, is considering slight changes…nothing big, mind you….because one of its largest employers is considering a relocation:
Connecticut\’s Democratic leaders were willing Thursday to make minor changes to the business taxes that prompted some major employers to threaten to leave the state, but said they won\’t roll the taxes back and expressed doubt that any of the firms would move.
Their olive branch came a day after the General Assembly adjourned its regular legislative session and passed the two-year, $40.3 billion state budget proposed by Democrats.
The plan includes numerous business tax changes, including higher taxes on computer and data processing services, limits on tax credits, limits on when losses can be reported, and how business income is reported.
If you read the entire article – as I hope you do – you\’ll find Democrat legislatures sneering out sarcasms in answer to GE\’s statement. Evidently they think the business climate is so great in Connecticut, and so inferior elsewhere, that this kind of company would never, ever leave their paradise.
One look at how many companies are, in fact, relocating to states that don\’t crush them with more and more taxation tells a very different story.
Personally, while I wish no ill will toward the 800 GE employees in Connecticut, it would not bother me one bit if this move were to take place. Somewhere else – a place where business is not seen as an enemy, to be tolerated only as a cash cow for taxation – there are 800 people who would love to have those jobs.
And don\’t think that GE is the only one either.
Oh, one other thing. Yes, I do enjoy the irony of GE, which was parent company of MSNBC – Tax The Crap Out Of Business Central – making this statement. Funny how things change when you\’re the one who has to pay…….
