The idea has been floated today (and you can bet Democrats and their accomplice media will continue to float it) that, by attending the meeting with a Russian woman who said she had dirt on Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr. was committing an illegal act: i.e. he was trying to get something of value for the Trump campaign from a foreign national.
With that in mind, I thought you might want to see the actual law he is supposed to have broken.
Here it is:
52 U.S. Code § 30121 – Contributions and donations by foreign nationals
As you can plainly see – or at least I hope you can plainly see – the law clearly is meant to prohibit money, or goods that have some kind of monetary value, from being contributed or donated by a foreign national to a candidate running for federal, state or local office.
Unless you believe that anything a politician hears from a foreign national about his or her opponent is an illegal donation of some kind, and therefore cannot be used, the law has no relevance to Donald Trump Jr’s meeting with the Russian woman (whose reason for meeting with him remains a mystery, since she offered no information about Hillary Clinton at all.)
Let me put this another way: Suppose that, during last year’s presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and in the course of their discussions, he mentioned something negative about Donald Trump. Do you think for one nanosecond that Ms. Clinton would not have used the information? Do you think for one nanosecond that any Democrat or Republican would try to claim that her use of the information was illegal?
The same media that are jumping all over Trump Jr.’s meeting would have laughed that claim out of existence.
The reason? Because crap like this has legs only if it is used against Republicans.
Of course, people who hate Republicans in general and/or Donald Trump in particular – and I certainly know enough who do – are probably thrilled by this double standard being applied to Donald Trump Jr. – and, by extension, his father.
But if they are, I strongly suggest they remember the old saying that what goes around comes around.
A case in point? The only reason Neil Gorsuch sits on the United States Supreme Court is that then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid decided to change the rules that, in their previous form, would have doubtlessly prevented Gorsuch’s nomination from being passed by the senate.
Start playing games with the legality of hearing information, regardless of where it comes from, and you risk, at some point down the road, being stung by exactly the nonsense you are perpetrating.
That’s something well worth remembering.
