The following excerpt from Joseph Lawler’s article in the Washington Examiner is great news for the country. But terrible news for Democrats.
Take a look. Then we’ll discuss.
New applications for unemployment insurance benefits plunged by 41,000 to 220,000 in the second week of 2018, the Labor Department reported Thursday, the lowest level in nearly 45 years.
The report easily beat forecasters expectations for new jobless claims to drift down to around 250,000.
The total number of people receiving unemployment benefits, which are available for up to 26 weeks in most states, stayed below 2 million, also near the lowest levels since the 1970s.
Add that to the huge increase in the stock market (thus people’s retirement funds) and the way-low unemployment rates – historically low for Black and Latino workers – and what have you got?
Remember that old maxim, “It’s The Economy, Stupid”? Well the economy is booming. And, next month, a large majority of working people will find more money in their paychecks because of the just-passed tax legislation
– The legislation not one Democrat in either the house or senate voted for.
-The tax legislation Democrats spent months telling voters that its only beneficiaries would be rich people.
-The tax legislation that caused millions of people to get bonuses and raises even before lower taxes will raise their take-home pay.
Who do you think they will credit for this happy turn of events? Barack Obama? Chuck Schumer? Nancy Pelosi?
No, they will credit Donald Trump and Republicans…which means that, since the economy almost always drives voting patterns, that sea-change in the house and senate – the one which is supposed to propel Democrats back into power this coming November – may be going bye-bye.
What can save Democrats’ prospects for the midterm elections? A downturn in the economy, that’s what.
It is therefore in Democrats’ political interest to do whatever they can to subvert the booming economy.
Maybe a government shutdown would be a good start. Especially if most mainstream media are willing to blame Republicans rather than Democrats or both parties for it.
After that? We’ll see what they have up their sleeves.
